The meaning of the acronym FACE, Facilitating Active Community Empowerment , was envisioned in Phnom Phen , Cambodia by two Canadian students who were spending the Summer there working with a NGO. As a result of their volunteerism it became clear to the students that the aims of humanitarian aid work are best realized when projects engage completely with the local residents of the area in question. Sustainable development is not limited to aid packages dropped from airplanes or new buildings donated by multi-million dollar corporations. While it is certainly necessary for help to be brought in the form of donations, the most efficient and effective form of humanitarian aid comes in the form of sustainable development, wherein locals are given the resources and guidance necessary to carry out developmental projects themselves. This is why FACE invests in projects which “facilitate active community empowerment” and engage directly with the locals of the area in question. Ideally, NGOs engaging in aid work are temporary rather than long-lasting. In the best case scenario, the locals would be able to carry on the projects with no external assistance in the end.

FACE is currently a not-for-profit Canadian society and is in the process of becoming a charity. While FACE is currently involved with projects in South East Asia and Vancouver , it is always interested in expanding. We currently have members in Canada , America , Cambodia , Laos , Nepal , Indonesia , the Philippines and Nigeria , among others.

Some of our Objectives:

  • To strengthen the capacity of poor and marginalized communities throughout the world with the aim of improving their standard of living
  • To raise awareness on the issues of sustainable development, empowerment of the disenfranchised, sex trafficking and landmines.
  • To organize local fundraising campaigns for funding both local and international projects, while raising awareness in the local community .
  • To develop, foster and support FACE Humanitarian Society sponsored projects in our local and global community.
  • To promote FACE Humanitarian Society as a humanistic and progressive organization in the local and global community.
